Our curriculum will:
- inspire, challenge and excite all learners and equip them with the confidence, the ability and the desire to make the world a better place;
- be based on clear, shared aims, principles and values that put the pupil and our shared Christian faith at their heart;

- promote independence of thought and creativity of mind through a wide range of learning experience.
To succeed in life, children need to be able to communicate confidently, both orally and in written form. At St Edward’s Primary School, the Power of Reading initiative is used throughout the school, which encourages children to develop a real love of reading
through opportunities to explore a wide variety of high quality texts. Drama, role play, discussion, debate and art are used to bring books to life and increase their appeal to all learners.
From Nursery Year, children are taught to write in cursive style, using ‘Letters and Sounds’, supported by some aspects of ‘Jolly Phonics’. As they progress through the school, the ‘Support for Spelling’ scheme is used to further their learning. Although all pupils
read regularly with adults in school, we ask that parents support us by reading with their children at home each day.
Throughout their school careers, children write with a purpose and an awareness of audience. Using rich texts as inspiration, they are motivated to achieve high quality and imaginative writing.
Nursery and Reception children are taught to form their letters correctly and most children are doing neat, cursive writing at the age of six. We attach considerable importance to neat handwriting, correct spelling, correct punctuation and good use of English.
Children have many opportunities to discuss their work with their teacher, with a partner or as a member of a group and to talk in front of the whole class or to the whole year group in assembly. All children use the school library and have the chance to take part
in drama productions and/or concerts.

Modern Foreign Languages
We believe that learning a modern foreign language is important to promote an interest, curiosity and understanding about the wider world and to provide a sense of European identity.
All children learn French from Reception Year. Children start by learning songs and simple greetings. Early language work is mainly oral and emphasis is put on communication.
Our MFL Lead Teacher is Miss Jacklin.
The teaching of mathematics is both systematic and challenging. There are opportunities for children to consolidate their learning whilst the teacher ensures the necessary building blocks are in place for all children to make very good
progress in mathematics.
Children’s work covers using and applying mathematics, number, shape and space and handling data. Foundation work in our Lower School classes is of extreme importance and children do a great deal of
practical work to increase their understanding. The 'Maths Mastery' approach is currently used from the latter part of Reception Year to Year 3. This approach will spread throughout the school as Year 3 pupils progress. The youngest children learn to calculate using a range of concrete objects to help their developing understanding of abstract concepts. Consistent
language and calculation strategies are a feature of our approach.
Our Mathematics Lead Teachers are Mr Chana, Mrs Newcombe and Mrs Smith.
Children are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science which enable them to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena and to work scientifically. Pupils are encouraged to understand how
science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes. They are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implcations of science today and for the future.
Our Science Lead Teachers are Mrs Hall and Mrs Hetchin.
Our high quality computing curriculum equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand the world they live in. At its heart is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work
and how to put these knowledge to use through programming.
Our Computing Lead Teacher is Miss Howard.
Our history curriculum inspires pupis' curiosity to know more about the past, including the rich history of Romford and the surrounding area. They are equipped to ask perceptive questions, think critiically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop
perspective and judgment. In addition to understanding their local history, children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world.
Linked to our International School Status, geography teaching inspires children's fascination about the world and its peoples, equipping them with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments.

All children learn to make music and to sing. St. Edward’s has a strong music tradition and children are taught in classes and in small groups. Children are encouraged to learn to play a musical instrument from Reception Year. There are opportunities for
additional music lessons where children can learn to play stringed, brass and woodwind instruments, join one of our ensembles or sing in one of our school choirs.
We believe, art, craft and design engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Children's skill are developed through a wide range of artistic activities,
including observational drawing, painting, pattern work, clay modelling, the study of painters and different artistic styles.
Our Lead Teachers for Creative Arts are Miss Allen (art), Mrs Butler and Miss MacPherson (music).
Design and Technology
Children use creativity and imagination to design and make products which solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.
Our Lead Teacher for Design and Technology is Miss Smallman.
Physical Health and Well-Being
Children have two hours of physical education each week. Lessons include gymnastics, swimming, dance, athletics, ball skills, football, tag rugby, hockey, netball, cricket and rounders. Adventure sports are introduced in Key Stage 2 as part of organised visits to Lamboure End, Stubbers Adventure Centre
and our annual Year 6 residential trip.
As a Food for Life Partnership Flagship School, we put great emphasis on teaching children about how to live healthy lives, including where their food comes from by having close links with a local farm and providing opportunities to cook and grow
fruit and vegetables throughout their time at school.
