At St Edward’s CE Reception we believe that all children are entitled to the best possible start to their school life, both intellectually and emotionally, in order to enable them to develop their full potential.
We currently have 90 children in Reception who are organised into three classes. These are RM led by Miss McPherson, RF led by Miss Faulkner and RJ led by Miss Jacklin. The class teachers are supported by a team of highly qualified teaching assistants- Mrs Crowther, Mrs O’Neill, Miss Ross and Mrs Todd. Every child is assigned a key worker, which for the majority of children will be their class teacher.
The Early Years framework provides a long term plan to follow by ensuring that all early learning goals are covered throughout the academic year. Medium term planning is created and takes into account the individual children’s learning and developmental needs. Our starting point for planning is from the children’s interests. Our topics have included ourselves, space, dinosaurs, superheroes and fairy tales. We actively encourage all parents to contribute to the planning process. All areas of learning and development are planned for and available to access within the setting.
We organise our day to provide a balance between the following:-
· Child initiated activities – children make choices from within the learning environment to meet his/her outcome for learning.
· Adult initiated activities – practitioners provide the resources to stimulate and to consolidate learning.
· Adult directed activities – children engage in planned activities to meet specific learning outcomes.
Throughout each day our children have access to a shared indoor learning environment, which has been thoughtfully created to maximize learning opportunities. Our children are also able to explore our extensive outdoor environment all year round, where activities are planned carefully to meet the learning needs and interests of all children.
At St Edward’s CE Primary School we recognise that young children learn best when they are active. We understand that active learning involves other people, objects, ideas and events that engage and involve children for sustained periods. Therefore, we believe that early years education should be as practical as possible and our setting has an ethos of learning through play. Come to our stay and play sessions over the year where we will be demonstrating how we teach phonics and mathematics. It is an opportunity to view your child’s learning journey and play alongside them. We will post our weekly newsletters here so that you can keep well informed about what your child will be learning. Please check the website regularly for any updates or news.
