Weekly Update

Friday, 9th September 2022

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to our first newsletter of the new academic year. It has been fantastic to see our children return to school and settle back in to school life so well. We have also really enjoyed welcoming our new Reception and Nursery children this week, ready to begin fully next Monday at the normal time of 8.35am.

We join with the nation in being saddened by the news of the Queen's death. Today in school we have gathered for a time of Collective Worship to remember the Queen, who she was and celebrate the life of a good and faithful servant. As more information comes out about any impact this time of mourning has on school life, we will share this with parents.

Next week we will be releasing ‘Welcome Videos’ from myself and Mrs Sajuwa as well as Class Teachers which will give you more information about what your child will be learning in the coming year and some of the exciting new projects and initiatives we will be introducing. For example, every day this year, we will be reading a picture book to the whole school, so 190 books will be read to all children across the year. If you haven’t asked your children what they have been reading this week, why not ask them today! The weekly book list will be posted on our Facebook page every Monday.

Please see, below, some news and notices that we hope will be useful to you.

Parent Calendar

Attached to this email is the first draft of our Parent Calendar for this term. Whilst we try to give parents ample notice of what is going on at school, please note that these dates are subject to change and there may be some additions- both of which we will aim to give you plenty of notice with. A ‘live’ calendar is available on our school website.

Knowledge Organisers

We believe it is very important that parents are aware of what their children are learning. We understand that a number of you take a keen interest in speaking this through with your children and supporting their learning at home. Our Knowledge Organisers are all available at the bottom of our ‘Curriculum’ webpage, on our website here:  https://www.stedwardsva.net/The-Curriculum/

If you would like a paper copy of your child’s knowledge organiser for ease of use, please fill the form in here: https://forms.gle/TgB4e5jQ2UoUVpHG6

Attendance in School

Good attendance for your children leads to good outcomes. We will be working very closely with parents and children this year to celebrate and encourage good attendance and, when needed, challenge persistent absence. We would like to remind parents that holidays during term time will always be ‘unauthorised’ and our Local Authority policy is to fine parents for these, which they regularly do. Please therefore ensure that holidays and visits abroad are confined to school holidays. A copy of our school term dates can be found here: https://www.stedwardsva.net/docs/Term_Dates_2022-23_FINAL.pdf

All Age Service at St Edward’s Church

Welcome back to everyone! I hope you’ve had all you hoped for over the summer break. In July it was fantastic to see our Year 6's perform their ‘Circle of Life’ song & dance performance at our All Age Eucharist in church. This Sunday, 11 September at 10am, sees the first of the school year led by our new Associate Priest, Fr Michael. As well as craft activities and participation by our young people, there’ll be refreshments to follow. If you’re free, please join us. Fr David Simpson.

Have a lovely weekend,

Chris Speller
