Welcome back Year 4!

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have really enjoyed welcoming back your wonderful children and they have clearly missed the routines of the school environment and their friends.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any worries or concerns that you would like us to be aware of.  We wanted to contact you to give you some key information about the coming weeks in school.

PE & Swimming

This term, all year 4 classes will be having their PE lessons on a Friday.  On this day children will be expected to come into school in their PE kits.  This includes: a PE t-shirt and shorts, a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms and a pair of black trainers/plimsolls.  Please ensure all items are named and that these requirements are stuck to, as we will be contacting parents where the incorrect uniform is worn.

We will be having our Swimming lessons every Monday, starting from the week beginning Monday, 21st September.  If possible, it would be helpful for the children to have a packed lunch on this day, so they can eat in good time before their lesson, this would mainly affect 4LH.  Children will be expected to dress themselves independently, so please do practice this (especially if children are returning in winter uniform, as they will be doing up their school ties).

Spellings, Homework and Reading Books

Year 4 will be setting homework on a Friday.  On this day we will begin by testing spellings.  These will be marked by the teacher, and the children will write down their score at the back of their homework books.  We will explain the homework to the children and issue the new spellings.  Children will be supported with three spelling lessons per week before their Friday test.

Reading books will be issued every Monday.  We will be quarantining books for everyone’s safety and not be using reading records at this time.

As a result, children will only need to bring their school bags in on Mondays to carry home their reading books.  On all other days, this is optional.  They may wish to bring their bag on a Friday, but this is not essential.  Please ensure that children are wearing the correct school bags.

Water bottles, Pencil Cases and moisturiser

Children are expected to bring a labelled water bottle into school.  These will be returned home each day to be cleaned and refilled.

Children are welcome to bring in a small plain pencil case to have on their table.  All year 4 classes will be providing stationery for children to use, but we are aware some children enjoy having their own additional equipment.

Children are encouraged to bring a small, labelled pot of hand moisturiser to keep on their desks.  This will be kept in school once bought in.

Our Curriculum this term

Attached to this email is our Curriculum map for Autumn 1.  We are particularly looking forward to our Literacy, as we have new texts to study this year.  Also, we will be following a new Power Maths scheme and we know the children are going to love it.  We are very much looking forward to sharing our foundation topics and worship will be at the forefront of everything we do.  Children will be able to prepare and deliver their own Class Assembly on a weekly rota.

Communication & the office

Please do ensure your contact details are up to date with the school office.  We will be posting pictures of some of the exciting things we are doing on our school website and Facebook page, so please do follow us on there.

The office remains ‘Closed’ to visitors and therefore please communicate with the school by phone or email (contact@stedwardsva.net)

If you would like to discuss anything with us, as class teachers, we are very welcome to arrange a time to do so.  Please note that, due to encouraging effective social distancing, we may not be able to have longer conversations with parents at the start/end of the day, so please book in a time with the office if you wish to make contact with us.

Despite school being different to normal, we very much look forward to working with your children and supporting them with their learning this year.  We look forward to getting to know them and seeing them develop over the coming year.

Kind regards

Mrs L.  Hall 4LH (Year Group Leader), Miss S.  Pannell 4P and Mrs E.  Hetchin 4EH
